Patients Want to See What Doctors Write about Them, Says Survey

Have you ever wondered about what your doctor note’s say about you in your health record? If you have, you are not alone.

According to an article published today in the Seattle Times, primary-care patients at three large medical centers across the world, including a medical center in Seattle, were “overwhelmingly enthusiastic” about seeing what the doctor’s had to write on their patient health record notes.

Researchers were expecting a different result and were very surprised by what they described as “patient’s eagerness” to know what doctors write about them.

This one year pilot project called “OpenNotes” involved almost 38,000 patients and 173 doctors.

Despite predictions that people with more education would be more interested in knowing what doctors say, the researchers found that there was no difference in levels of interest among groups of different education levels.

In fact, according to Dr. Joann Elmore, a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, even homeless patients signed up for the pilot program and are reported to use the public library or hospital.

At the end of the study, between 93 and 97 of the patients agreed that they liked the idea of making doctors’ personal health record notes available.

  1. So true! Not that i think my doctor is writing anything secretive or controversial…but for my own health I think it’s my right to see his notes.
